Ultralocal.in is a neighbourhood-focused digital platform that makes it easier for people to discover, publish and share information relevant to the places where they live.
National and city-level media cannot always capture every broken road, water problem, community initiative, local achievement, public event, new business or neighbourhood concern. Ultralocal.in seeks to bridge this information gap by organising locally relevant content around individual Postal Index Number (PIN) Codes.
The platform is owned and operated by Parjanya Consultants Private Limited, an Indian company.
How Ultralocal.in works
Ultralocal.in provides the technology and publishing infrastructure through which authorised Independent PIN Publishers can operate designated PIN Code blog pages and publish locally relevant articles.
Independent PIN Publishers may report on subjects such as:
- Civic services and neighbourhood infrastructure;
- Public safety, health and environmental concerns;
- Local events, cultural activities and community initiatives;
- Schools, businesses, associations and public institutions;
- Interviews with residents, officials and community representatives;
- Consumer information and developments affecting local life; and
- Other matters reasonably connected with the allotted PIN Code.
The company may offer general, non-binding suggestions about potentially useful subjects. Independent PIN Publishers remain free to select their stories and independently research, verify, prepare and publish their content.
Independent local publishing
Independent PIN Publishers are not employees, agents, partners or official spokespersons of Parjanya Consultants Private Limited. The company does not pay them a salary, honorarium or professional fee for publishing articles.
Each Independent PIN Publisher exercises independent editorial judgement and bears responsibility for the articles, photographs, videos, claims and other material that he or she creates or publishes.
Articles published by Independent PIN Publishers constitute independently generated third-party content. Their publication on Ultralocal.in does not, by itself, mean that Parjanya Consultants Private Limited has commissioned, verified, approved, adopted or endorsed the information, allegations, opinions, businesses, products or services appearing in them.
Subject to applicable law, editorial responsibility for such content rests with the Independent PIN Publisher who created and published it.
Accuracy, fairness and responsible reporting
Every Independent PIN Publisher must accept Ultralocal.in’s Terms and Conditions and Ethical Code of Conduct before being enrolled.
PIN Publishers are expected to:
- Verify material facts, names, figures, quotations and allegations;
- Distinguish clearly between facts, allegations, opinions and advertisements;
- Respect privacy, dignity, copyright and other legal rights;
- Seek an appropriate response before publishing material allegations;
- Correct material errors promptly and transparently;
- Protect the identities of legally protected persons, particularly children and victims of sexual offences;
- Disclose conflicts of interest and commercial relationships; and
- Refrain from publishing defamatory, unlawful, misleading, plagiarised or harmful content.
These standards are intended to promote responsible neighbourhood reporting without transferring editorial control over independently created articles to the company.
Sponsored content
Independent PIN Publishers may earn income by entering into their own arrangements for permitted paid articles or sponsored content.
Every paid or sponsored article must be clearly and prominently identified as an Advertisement, Sponsored, Paid Promotion or through another appropriate disclosure. Sponsored content must not be disguised as independent reporting.
Unless Parjanya Consultants Private Limited expressly agrees otherwise in writing, an arrangement between a sponsor and an Independent PIN Publisher is an independent transaction between those parties. The PIN Publisher is responsible for the accuracy and legality of commercial claims and must not represent that the company endorses or guarantees the sponsor, product or service.
How the platform is supported
Ultralocal.in is supported through advertising.
Parjanya Consultants Private Limited may place display advertisements, text advertisements, sponsored links or other advertising formats anywhere on the website, including within or alongside PIN Code pages and independently published articles.
Advertising revenue generated from advertisements placed by the company belongs to the company and helps it operate, maintain and develop the platform. The appearance of an advertisement beside an article does not mean that the advertiser endorses the article, that the Independent PIN Publisher endorses the advertiser, or that the company endorses independently published content.
Community participation and content moderation
Readers can red-flag content that they believe is inaccurate, unlawful, harmful or contrary to the platform’s policies.
A red flag does not automatically establish that the content is improper. The platform may examine the matter and, where appropriate, request a correction, add a label or clarification, restrict access to the content, suspend it or remove it.
Ultralocal.in may also act when required by applicable law, a court order, a lawful government direction, protection of a person’s rights or safety, or the security and integrity of the platform.
Moderation is a platform-governance and legal-compliance function. Reviewing, labelling, restricting or removing independently generated content does not, by itself, constitute the company’s endorsement or adoption of that content or transfer editorial responsibility from the Independent PIN Publisher.
Readers may use the red-flag facility for an initial report or submit a formal complaint through the grievance-redressal mechanism displayed on the website.
